Research Summary

My research in hypertension includes several studies evaluating the need for antihypertensive medication drug therapy using the Canadian Heart Health Survey. We determined that although a significant number of patients with hypertension were untreated as per the Canadian guidelines, 25% of hypertensive Canadians were actually low cardiovascular risk, not requiring any medications (Can J Card 2002;18(6): 657-61). In a separate study, we determined that the majority of elderly hypertensive patients that were unaware of their hypertensive status would not require meet criteria for needing drug therapy. (BMC Cardiovasc Disord. 2005;5(1):4).  I contribute towards a national knowledge translation strategy to improve hypertension management in Canada through the Canadian Hypertension Recommendations (first author) (Can J Cardiol. 2005;21(8):657-72, Can J Cardiol. 2004;20(1):41-54). These studies and recommendations papers have been used nationally and internationally to guide health care workers and policy makers in the treatment of hypertension.
